Drawing a shape to select your data
The Experience Builder UI Widget allows you to select data on your map by drawing a shape.
You can draw a point, line, rectangle, circle or a polygon.
You will be drawing a rectangle to lasso a few Schools.
First, turn off all the layers from the Table of Contents except the Schools to reduce the clutter.
Pan and Zoom to your area of interest.
You can Pan the map by dragging your mouse while holding down the left mouse button.
You can Zoom In and Out by using your mouse wheel or by using the Zoom In/Out Tools.
Click on the Select by Rectangle Tool.
Notice how the information bubble appears below prompting you to draw a rectangle.
The mouse curser turns into a cross-hair.
Draw a rectangle to lasso a few Schools.
The Identify Section opens up to show you the number of Schools that have been identified within this rectangle.
Click on the Schools Layer Name or the Arrow to view the list of Schools Identified.
This reveals the School Names.
Click on the first School Name.
The selected School is highlighted in cyan.
The Attributes of the selected School is shown below.
To View all the Attributes, hold down the <Shift> Key while clicking on the School Name.
Scroll down or use your mouse wheel to list all the attributes.
To View the Item Definitions, hold down the <Ctrl> Key while clicking on the School Name.
It shows you if the field is Visible, the Field Name, Field Alias and Item Type.
Click on the second School Name.
The selected School is highlighted in cyan.
The Attributes of the selected School is shown below.
Besides viewing all the attributes of your selected feature, there are several other operations available to you.
Open the Layer Menu next to the School Name.
Select Pan to Location from the Layer Menu
The map pans to center your selected School within your map display area.
Open the Layer Menu and select Zoom to Location.
The map zooms in to your selected School.
Rather than viewing the attributes of the features one at a time, there is an option to view the attributes of all selected features within a Table.
Expand the Menu next to the Schools Points Layer.
Select Show in Table
You will get a message saying Loading XUIGrid.
The attributes of all selected Schools will appear in a Grid format.
Move the Scroll bar to the right to see the rest of the attributes.
Click on the COLUMNS tool.
You can show or hide the items you want to display.
Open the FILTERS tool.
You can specify your filtering criteria.
You are going to filter down the list to show only Charter Schools.
Expand the Columns drop down list.
Select CHARTER
Set your Operator to equals
Enter Value = Yes
1 filter has been applied
There is one Charter School within the selection.
The Filter Tool helps to narrow down your selection.
This can come in handy when you have a large selection set.
The DENSITY tool allows you to change the line spacing.
Select Comfortable
Open the EXPORT tool.
Select Download as CSV
Open the resulting Education National.csv file in Excel.
These are the attributes of your selected Schools.
By default the name of the Data Layer becomes the name of the Table.
You can open multiple Tables.
They appear as separate Tabs.
You can rename the tabs.
Open the Options Menu
Select Rename Tab
Rename the Tab Header Text to Selected Schools.
APPLY
Click on the X to close the Tab.
Next, you are going to select a few Schools by drawing a circle.
Clear the existing selection.
Click on the Home Button to get back to the default extents.
Open the Selection Options Menu.
Select Miles as your distance unit.
Select Square Miles as your area unit.
Engage the Select by Circle Tool.
Notice how the information bubble appears prompting you to draw a circle.
Drop a point on the map and drag the mouse to draw a circle.
Notice how the radius of the circle is reported in miles as you expand the circle.
7 Schools are found within this circle.
Clear the Selection
Next, you are going to make a selection using the Select by Polygon Tool.
Start the first vertex of your polygon with a single click.
Move your mouse and click to add additional vertices.
End your polygon with a double click.
7 Schools are found.
Clear the Selection.
Next, you will use the Select by Point Tool.
Engage the Select by Point Tool.
Drop a Point in the State of Nevada.
Notice how no Schools are identified.
However, the point you added intersects 1 School District and 1 State.
These are all Polygon Layers.
The Layer Names are grayed out because they have been turned off.
Open the Layer Menu of the States Layer.
Turn Layer Visibility On.
1 State has been selected.
Expand the Layer Name or click on the Layer Name.
The selected State is Nevada.
Open the Layer Menu for the Selected State of Nevada.
Select Pan to Location
This centers the State of Nevada in your map display area.
The selected state is highlighted in cyan.
